for the last hour calling jodi arias a manipulative individual who wants to play the victim. in a big break for the defense earlier, the trial judge told a jury they can consider the lesser charge of manslaughter. arias is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing and shooting death of her boyfriend, travis alexander in 2008. she has confessed to killing him and could face the death penalty if convicted. nbc has been informing the proceedings out of phoenix for us. diana, back to the judge's decision. did that catch everyone off guard or by surprise? >> reporter: yeah, you know, everyone in the courtroom said, wow, now this jury has options. that is big a deal here. they can choose to go for a second-degree murder or a manslaughter. both of which carry sentences of years in prison as opposed to first-degree murder which carries the death penalty. so now if there is a juror that has any shred of doubt that she was a cold-blooded murderer, they can choose to go with a lesser option and that's considered a big win for the defense. i want to tell you though. this is a really tough decisi

, accused murderer jodi arias is one step closer to learning her fate in the 2008 murder of her ex-boyfriend. moments from now closing arguments will begin in this high-profile case, which for four straight months unfolded like a lifetime movie. but the sexually explicit revelations, sheering consistencies in arias' testimony and a laundry list of courtroom drama were all too real. nbc's diana alvear is outside the courtroom. what can we expect today? >> reporter: hi, thomas. well, they're going to start with jury instructions then they're going to head straight into closing arguments. you'll be listening for two separate kinds of arguments. prosecutors want to nail down once and for all that jodi arias committed cold-blooded premeditated murder. that she knew what she was doing when she killed travis alexander. for example, she dyed her hair a couple days before she last saw him, that she bought gas cans and filled them up so she wouldn't have to stop at a gas station. the defense wants to get the death penalty off the table. they want to do that by trying to get the jurors to see

. brooke? >>> i want to talk about the jodi arias trial now, because it could all boil down to what happens today. right now, closing arguments are under way in phoenix, and we have heard four months of testimony about sex, about lies, and underwear. it may all come down to arias' mental state. the defense is arguing that arias had post-traumatic stress disorder when she killed her ex-boyfriend, travis alexander, in self defense. on the other hand, prosecution says arias had a borderline personality disorder and that the killing was premeditated. alexander was found dead in the shower with a bullet to his head and 27 stab wounds, and a slit to his throat. jodi arias spent 18 days on the stand pleading her case. now lawyers are making their final closing arguments. now, some attorneys like to save a surprise sometimes for closing arguments because it's the last thing those jurors may hold on to, and if we hear any surprise fireworks, obviously, inside that courtroom, we will let you know right away. >>> coming up next, though, this is a story that everyone is talking about today. i was talki
